About the work
I begin with the structure of the face and the particular details that make someone recognisable.
Once the likeness is established, I decide what needs to remain clear and what can soften, break apart or disappear into the paper.
Ryan Johnston is a portrait artist based in Aberdeen, Scotland, working primarily in graphite.
Graphite gives me the precision I need in the face, but also the freedom to leave other areas unresolved. I am interested in portraits that feel carefully observed without being overworked, and in how much a drawing can leave out without losing the person.
